The Steel Isle.

2022

Problem

Within the next decade, over 3 million tones of steel from offshore platforms in the North Sea is due to be recycled. While recycling is a better alternative to manufacturing new material, the melting and transportation of used steel continues to contribute to climate change.

Process

We spoke with members of the community and council in Ireland and Scotland to find out what we could repurpose the steel into in order to help the community. Our key insight was that coastal communities are at a loss in the tourism sector following the recent pandemic. We conducted        co-creation sessions and interviews with our chosen coastal community in Clare, Ireland to reach our final outcome.

Proposal

Our proposal is an upcycled steel boardwalk that runs along the coastline. The boardwalk aids the community as it creates a new attraction for tourists which helps generate employment for locals. It also promotes sustainability in local communities and governments by building new infrastructures made from repurposed materials.
